Burbank’s Rent Control Proposal: A Threat to Small Property Owners
October 25, 2024 0 Comment Category: UncategorizedBurbank’s Rent Control Proposal: A Threat to Small Property Owners
At the October 15th meeting, the Burbank City Council discussed a potential rent cap of 60% of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and explored the costly creation of a rental registry. These proposals would place immense pressure on small, mom-and-pop landlords, limiting their ability to cover essential repairs for older properties, ultimately driving many out of the market.
The Threat of Rent Control and Rental Registries
Rent control policies often force small property owners to sell, reducing naturally occurring affordable housing. Without the flexibility to raise rents to cover major repairs, these owners are pushed out, and their properties are often replaced by high-cost developments. The proposed rental registry adds more financial burden, creating a costly bureaucracy to track rental properties that are already licensed by the city.
Support New Leadership on November 5th
November 5th presents an opportunity to change the direction of Burbank’s housing policies. AAGLA has endorsed Chris Rizzotti and Judie Wilke for City Council, both of whom take a fair approach to protecting small property owners and maintaining affordable housing. Supporting these candidates is crucial to avoiding further damage to the rental market.
